Compiled from aerial photographs taken in 1972 and field surveying, "The Heart of the Grand Canyon" map provides striking topography of the canyon and detail of park facilities, trails, campgrounds, and more. Published in July 1978, this map is half of a two-map set. Its companion is entitled "The Grand Canyon of the Colorado" and both maps appeared with two articles on the park. The 1978 Heart of the Grand Canyon map features: • Striking relief • Detail of the visitors center and museum, ampitheater, El Tovar hotel, and more • Ranger stations, picnic areas, campgrounds, ruins, emergency telephones, and buildings • Rapids, springs, cliffs, sand, forests, and other vegetation • Roads, trails, and railroads • Survey control points and elevations in feet
